Chambre Louis XVI
One of my favorite rooms. Situated on the grand gallery of the Renaissance wing, you reach it by the stairway of honor constructed in 1588 by the architect Francois Gabriel. And by the grand gallery of Ladies. The height of the ceiling gives the room a spacious feeling, a feeling further confirmed by the huge king size bed, created by joining two beds of the Louis XVI period. All the furniture and pictures are from the period and several portraits of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette fit naturally in this beautiful room. Among these portraits is a reproduction of the famous portrait of Marie-Antoinette at the Conciergerie peinted by Kucharski (then at the “garde national”), an original of which my family has kept because of our common line of descendence (on my mother’s side) with the great Malesherbes, the courageous defender of the philosophers of the 18th Century Enlightenment in France, against the king, then defender of King Louis XVI against the revolutionaries (for which he was guillotined).
The pretty retro bathroom occupies a space which was formerly intended to be the W. C. for this room but was always used as a reception room . The wallpaper with 18th century motifs is especially luminous and the room gives an impression of sweet nostalgia.
